Boat, RV, and ATV Insurance: What Recreational Vehicle Owners Need to Know

Summer is peak season for recreational vehicles. Whether you’re out on the water with a boat, exploring the country in an RV, or hitting a trail on an ATV, August brings some of the highest usage of the year for these vehicles, and that makes it a great time to make sure your insurance coverage is in order.

Many people assume their standard auto or homeowners insurance covers recreational vehicles. In some cases, there may be limited coverage for smaller items stored at home, but for most boats, RVs, and ATVs, a separate, dedicated policy is the safest approach.

Boat Insurance

A boat insurance policy typically covers physical damage to your watercraft, liability for injuries or property damage to others, and fuel spill liability. Some policies also include coverage for personal property on board, towing assistance, and coverage for uninsured watercraft.

The type and size of your boat matter when it comes to coverage. A small fishing boat has different insurance needs than a large motorized cruiser or a personal watercraft like a jet ski. A licensed insurance agent can help you identify what coverage is appropriate based on how and where you use your boat.

RV Insurance

Recreational vehicles come in many forms—motorhomes, travel trailers, fifth wheels, and camper vans—and each can have distinct insurance needs. If your RV is motorized, it generally needs its own auto-style policy. Towable trailers may be covered to some extent under an existing auto policy, but that coverage is often limited.

RV insurance can include collision and comprehensive coverage, liability protection, coverage for attached accessories and equipment, and, in some cases, full-timer coverage for those who use an RV as a primary residence.

ATV and Off-Road Vehicle Insurance

ATVs, dirt bikes, and similar off-road vehicles are often excluded from standard auto policies, especially when used off-road or on private property. A dedicated ATV or off-road vehicle policy can cover physical damage, bodily injury liability, and property damage liability.

If you ride on trails, parks, or areas where other people are present, liability coverage is particularly important. An accident that injures another rider or causes property damage could lead to high costs without adequate coverage.

Why Dedicated Coverage Matters

Recreational vehicles represent a meaningful investment, and using them frequently, especially in August, increases exposure to potential loss. A gap in coverage at the wrong moment can mean absorbing the cost of repairs, medical bills, or liability claims out of pocket.

Great Lakes Insurance in Powell, Ohio can help you review your current coverage and explore options for your boat, RV, or ATV. Call us at (614) 841-4444 or request a quote online to get started.
